A grounding rod is designed to protect us against electricity that comes from the utility transformer. Its purpose is to connect electrical equipment to the service to provide a safe path back to the source so that if there's a ground fault it will complete the circuit and trip the breaker. If you place a current probe around the conductor going to earth or the ground rod itself you should never see any current flowing on the conductor.
